Beauty tips for Oily Skin

Oily skin can strike anyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or geographic location. A myriad of factors cause or exacerbate oily skin, including humidity, a poor face cleansing regimen and even exposure to cigarette smoke. Some people are genetically predisposed to oily skin, whereas many others experience a hike in oil production at certain stages in their life, such as during the teenage years. Additionally, women who are pregnant, going through menopause or taking birth control pills are especially susceptible to oily skin.
What are the effects of having oily skin? People who suffer from it might feel greasy a few hours after a shower. Women with oily complexions might find that their makeup wears off more easily, requiring them to reapply it multiple times per day. Oily skin is also a magnet for dirt and dust, which quickly accrue and clog pores. Clogged pores lead to acne, blackheads and other skin imperfections.

If you have oily skin, you are prone to acne, blackheads and spots. Your skin probably looks shiny and thick. Just as with any skin type, taking certain precautions and special care can help reduce skin problems.

The following are 10 tips for taking care of oily skin.

Wash Your Face:

You should wash your face twice a day.  Washing your face more than twice a day can also have a drying effect, which forces your skin to produce extra oil to protect itself. You can also try homemade cleansers to use for oily skin.

Clay Mask:

Once a week, use a clay mask to help keep your pores clear.  Clay is excellent for absorbing oil, and it will help to unclog your pores, helping to minimize their appearance.  If you want to exfoliate, use an exfoliating scrub once a week, but find a gentle one and only lightly massage it onto your skin.

Watch what you eat:

Cocktails and spicy foods may hit the spot on a hot night. But they won't do your skin any favors; they dilate blood vessels, and make you perspire. Limit yourself to one drink a night, and eat spicy foods no more than once a week. And consider loading up instead on carrots, cantaloupe, and spinach; foods like these that are high in vitamin A can actually slow oil production.

Face Wash:

Use a liquid face wash that contains alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as citric acid, lactic acid, or glycolic acid. The AHAs work in several ways, helping to slough off dead skin cells, reduce the oil in your pores, and combat infection.

Grainy Face Massage:

A fine-grain powder can help absorb oil and get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores. Grind and sift 2 teaspoons of dry oats, then moisten with some witch hazel to form a paste. Using your fingertips, massage this paste gently into your skin, then rinse it away with warm water.

Buttermilk Massage:

Several times a week, massage your face with buttermilk after washing it. The active cultures in buttermilk contain acids that help to clean away dirt and tighten pores. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse.

Try Aloe Vera:

Apply aloe vera gel (available in many drugstores as well as health-food stores) to your face to absorb oil and clear out pores. Dab the gel onto your face two to three times a day (especially after washing), then let it dry. The gel will feel more refreshing if it's cool, so keep it in the refrigerator.

Don't touch:

Keep your hands off your face during the day. Hands deliver excess oil and dirt.

Cornstarch:

Cornstarch dries up oily patches. Mix 1 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch with enough warm water to make a paste. Rub on your face, let dry, and then shower or rinse off with lukewarm water in the sink. Try this once a day for best results.

Egg Yolk:

A fast fix for removing oil shine requires one of the simplest foods: the egg. An egg yolk mask dries out the skin. Apply the egg yolk with a cotton ball to oily spots. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Salt:

This gift from the sea is nature's best desiccant. Place tepid water into a small spray bottle and add 1 teaspoon salt. Close your eyes, and pretend you're at the seashore. Then squirt some of this salt spray on your face once during the day. Blot dry.
