Find the lipstick that
works best with your skin tone. That way you'll have a super-flattering shade
that you know rocks. Finding the lip color that's made for your skin tone is
not quite as simple, unfortunately. Lip color is really more of an accessory
than a makeup product.
It's also a mood maker -- if you're feeling sultry, you
can wear gloss to draw attention to your mouth, or if you're feeling tired
after a long day you can grab a bold lip color for a pick-me-up before heading
out on the town. But do you know which shade complements your skin tone and
should be your go-to lip color?
So read on to find your
skin tone and the lip colors that go best with it (not to mention the shades
you should avoid as much as the "punch" at a frat party).
1.
Find
a color that is one to two shades deeper than your natural lips.
2. Experiment with shades of pink and red. Pink and red look good on all skin tones, and works with most outfits and hairstyles.
3. Avoid too much sparkle. Shimmer can look cheap. Look for lipsticks with a creamy finish. Light reflection should come from moisture in the formula, not metallic pigments.

3. Avoid too much sparkle. Shimmer can look cheap. Look for lipsticks with a creamy finish. Light reflection should come from moisture in the formula, not metallic pigments.
4. Look good nude. The prettiest nude lip color is slightly brighter or deeper than your skin tone. If you're pale, look for something with a hint of pink, like Burberry Beauty Lip Cover in Nude Rose. Those with yellow or olive undertones or dark skin look best with sandy beiges.
5. Remove one lip color completely before trying on the next. Otherwise, you will be mixing multiple colors together. Ask a sales rep for makeup remover or lotion.
6. Don’t match a lip color too closely with your clothing. For example, if you are wearing a fire-engine red dress, wearing the same exact color on your lips will look overwhelming.
7. Avoid the vampire effect, Blue- or black-based shades that are too dark can be severe, aging, and even a little scary. Look for lipsticks with berry undertones instead.
8. Don’t throw out lipsticks that don’t make the cut. You can create a great new lipcolor by blending the ones you don’t like. For lipstick that’s just a bit too bright, tone down the color with a darker liner before applying it.
Best Tips:
- For longer lasting color, coat
your entire lip with a liner (stick with the same shade as your lipstick)
before applying lipstick. This way you will still have some color left
after your lipstick fades.
- Dramatic eyes and dramatic lips
can look overdone. You can choose dramatic eyes or dramatic lips, not both
because you will be bringing too much attention to your eyes rather than
your lips, like when people talk to you they look into your eyes, not your
lips. (Unless they want to kiss you).
- These guidelines are meant to be
helpful, but are by no means rules. Remember that
everybody is different. What looks best on you might be independent of
your skin tone, so play around with different colors.
- When buying lipstick, don't
forget to consider lip liner, especially when buying red shades.
